The IVF process: What to Expect
There are many things that you can expect when
undergoing IVF treatment. There is a lot of information out there about the
process, and it's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the details. In this blog
post, we will break down what makes up an IVF cycle so you know what to expect
before and after your first round of IVF treatment!
- IVF involves ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval.
How many eggs you produce depends on your age, the type of IVF procedure is performed,
how long it has been since you had a period (over 12 months), and any other
underlying medical conditions that may affect fertility. The first part of an
IVF cycle is to stimulate the ovaries in order to grow more follicles than
usual - this can be done with medication or using ultrasound waves or both.
- Once there are enough follicles ready for harvest,
estrogen levels will be reduced so as not to interfere with progesterone
production at this stage during which time those mature eggs need to fully
develop into viable embryos before harvesting them 24 hours later via
transvaginal ultrasound-guided needle biopsy.
- Once the eggs are harvested, they will be mixed with
semen in a Petri dish to identify any sperm that can fertilize them and produce
embryos. These embryos’s DNA is then tested for chromosomal abnormalities like
translocations or mosaicism using an advanced technique called pre-implantation
genetic diagnosis (PGD). The quality of each individual embryo is also assessed
by evaluating how many cells it contains - this is known as "blastocyst
grading."
- If all goes well, we implant one of these
high-quality embryos into your uterus via laparoscopic surgery after three
days. This means you have just gone through five weeks of IVF treatment! Of
course, not every cycle ends happily... sometimes there isn't a single embryo
that is viable for implantation. Other times, the fertilization process doesn't
work or there are too many chromosomal abnormalities to allow an embryo to
fully develop into a healthy baby (called "embryo arrest").
