The Different Forms of IVF

In vitro fertilization, commonly abbreviated as IVF, is the process of fertilization where eggs combined with sperm in an external lab is allowed to grow in an incubator. The procedure involves implanting follicle into the woman's fallopian tubes, removing an existing ovum from the ovaries, stimulating the patient's ovary and allowing healthy sperm to fertilize them in a lab.

The process described above is the basic way in which in vitro fertilization works. There are other methods and ways by which this treatment can be carried out. Briefly, some of the different methods used are:

- In-vitro fertilization. In this treatment cycle, an embryo is implanted in the woman's fallopian tubes where it hatches into a baby very soon after conception. This is one of the most common IVF treatments cycle available today. Although this method is less invasive and offers quicker pregnancies, it has been reported that there are still cases where the embryos do not fertilize the eggs.

- Implantation. Another way of getting pregnant using in vitro fertilization is through implantation. Implantation occurs when the fertilized embryo is placed into the uterus of the woman who has undergone IVF. The eggs are retrieved from the ovaries before implantation takes place. Once, the fertilized egg implants in the uterus, the procedure is complete.

- IUI and IVF combined. One of the methods often recommended for couples who are experiencing difficulties in getting pregnant through standard procedures, IVF combined with IUI. This option involves combining the administration of IVF with the introduction of live embryos into the woman's body. This is often preferred over IVF if eggs are present in large quantities in the woman's body.
